Background

After graduating from high school in Indonesia, Student C entered a university in Indonesia. He came to Japan as a government scholarship student and studied Japanese for one year. After that, he entered a technical college (KOSEN) in Ehime Prefecture. Later, he transferred into the third year of the Information Engineering Course at Chiba University. In graduate school, he studied mathematics and information science and did research on AI.

Why did you decide to work in Japan?

I have lived in Japan for a long time and graduated from a Japanese university, so I wanted to work in Japan. I first became interested in Japan through games I played as a child, and I admired Japan.

Why did you choose your current company?

There are three main reasons. First, there are many chances to use English at work. I did not want to forget English, so I hoped to work at a company with many foreign employees and where both Japanese and English are used. Second, the company has business overseas. I thought I could use my background and language skills. Third, I was attracted to the wide range of services the company provides. I liked the idea of working on many different types of projects.

What kind of work will you do?

I will know more after I start working, but I think I will work as an engineer or programmer.

What did you promote during job hunting?

I talked about games and apps I created. I also mentioned that I won a prize in a programming contest when I was in technical college. I sometimes talked about my experience in hackathons, long-term internships, and even starting a business in Indonesia before coming to Japan.

Was there anything difficult?

Writing entry sheets was difficult because I do not like writing long texts. Interviews were also difficult, and I was rejected by some companies. Each company asks different questions, so sometimes I could not answer well with the answers I had prepared. Preparing for programming tests was also challenging.

Were there any effective ways to prepare for job hunting?

I used reverse job-offer websites. Through these websites, companies contact students after seeing their profiles. I joined events I found through these services and built connections with people.

If you use reverse job-offer services, you need to make your resume strong and full of experiences. So, it is good to gain experience through internships.

Do you have a vision for your future work?

My long-term goal is to become a CTO (Chief Technology Officer). I want to continue working with advanced technology. For that, I also want to learn about business at my company.

Finally, please give a message to students who will start job hunting.

Building connections with people is the most important thing. By connecting with others who are also job hunting, you can get a lot of information.

You cannot prepare for job hunting in a short time. If you want to work at an IT venture company, you should gain experience in advance. I recommend actively joining internships.

Your reason for applying is also very important. You need to explain why you want to join that company, how it is different from others, and how it matches your goals and future vision. It is important to clearly show the company’s strengths and connect them to your own ideas and experience.

If you prefer a job-based style (focused on skills and specific work), it may be good to look mainly at venture companies. Student C said he never wore a suit during job hunting. In venture companies in Japan, you may not need to follow very strict formal rules.
What is important is to have your own ideas and experiences, to communicate them clearly to others, and to build strong connections with people.
