Background
After graduating from a university in China, Student B came to Japan to study. He studied at a Japanese language school for one year. After that, he spent one year as a research student at the Graduate School of Humanities and Public Affairs at Chiba University, and then entered the master’s program.
Why did you decide to work in Japan?
Since I graduated from a Japanese graduate school, I wanted to gain work experience in Japan. After working for several years, I may return to China, but I am also thinking about the possibility of continuing to work in Japan.
Why did you choose your current company?
I believe that the demand for IT professionals will increase in the future, so I wanted to learn technical skills myself. Among IT companies, I had many chances to talk with employees through internships, and I felt the company atmosphere was very good. Specifically, the employees were calm and friendly, and it felt like a place where I could speak openly. I thought it would be an easy place to work. When I did not understand something, the employees explained it carefully, so I thought it would be good for my personal growth.
In addition to the IT industry, including my current company, I also applied for internships at trading companies and banks. I joined about 10 companies in total for internships. However, I only applied for the final selection at my current company and its subsidiary.
What kind of work will you do?
I applied for a sales position. However, I think I need IT knowledge to do sales in this field, so I may start my career as a system engineer (SE). I will not know the exact job details until June, when my department is decided.
As a humanities student, are you worried about entering the IT industry?
Yes, I am worried. However, the company sent me a textbook for the "Basic Information Technology Engineer" exam, and there are also online classes. I am studying by using these materials. There will also be training in April and May after I join the company, so I think my worries will slowly decrease.
What did you promote during job hunting?
I talked about how I increased sales at my part-time job. I explained how I talked to customers and improved sales. I worked at a duty-free shop and sold old-package stainless steel bottles to foreign customers. I thought carefully about how to sell products with old packaging and increase sales. In the end, I made a proposal to the person in charge. As a result, I was able to sell hundreds of bottles.
Was there anything difficult?
There were several difficult things.
First, there were words I did not understand during company information sessions. When I did not understand something, I asked the employees directly or searched for the meaning online later.
Second, it was difficult to choose an industry. I joined internships in many industries. Through those experiences, I thought about what I wanted to do and what I did not want to do, and then I narrowed down my choice.
Third, writing entry sheets and preparing for interviews were difficult. I used the university Career Support Office and Hello Work offices in Funabashi and Chiba to get advice.
※There is also an interview with a Hello Work staff member, so please check it as well.
Were there any effective ways to prepare for job hunting?
I used many apps, such as Mynavi, Rikunabi, and One Career. One Career was especially helpful because I could see other students’ entry sheets. I also think internships are important to understand companies better.
To join internships, you often need to submit entry sheets, take interviews, and sometimes written tests. So, internships are also good practice for the real selection process.
As I mentioned earlier, using the Career Support Office is also very helpful. I went there about five times to practice interviews. They also checked my Japanese and gave specific advice on my entry sheets, such as "write your conclusion first" and "be concise."
Do you have a vision for your future work?
First, I want to study and get the qualifications needed for my job. In the future, I would like to work in sales. I also hope to contribute to exchange between China and Japan.
Finally, please give a message to students who will start job hunting.
In Japan, it is important to start early. Officially, job hunting starts in March, but if you want to get a job offer early, it is better to start from summer. I was able to get advice and information from senior students in my laboratory, so building good relationships in your lab is also important. I also feel that improving Japanese language ability is necessary. It is important to be able to clearly express what you want to say in Japanese.
